Most travellers picture Kalpitiya as a single beach. In truth it is a scattered constellation of fourteen islands windswept sandbanks, fishing villages, dolphin channels and camping islets strung between a calm lagoon and the open Indian Ocean. Here is what each one offers, and how to explore them from the lagoon’s edge.

The Kalpitiya peninsula is made up of 14 islands spread across the Puttalam Lagoon and the coastline north of Kalpitiya town. Together they cover roughly 16.73 km², set between the lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, around 130 km north of Bandaranaike International Airport. Each island has its own character some are large and inhabited, others little more than a sandbank that appears at low tide.
